Women Who Cook: French Toast Casserole

As promised, this French Toast Casserole recipe is one of those blog posts where we @andrea-arostegui and @brittani-brookins are collaborating and writing together.

If you’ve been around for a while then you know I (Andrea) used to run a blog called Fixing the Dish and while it’s still a food photography portfolio on instagram, managing the blog and writing out recipes wasn’t an easy task, especially during wedding season. Britt, on the other hand, can cook up a storm with whatever she finds in her fridge and her pantry. The only problem when we both get in the kitchen is that we don’t measure anything while cooking, we just cook with our hearts, adding a sprinkle of this, a dash of that, and a whole lot of love.

Most of the women we know have requested cooking classes, and while we’re still working on them, we decided to start sharing a couple of our go-to recipes that will make life a whole lot yummier and easier.

We visit Britt’s Family’s Beach House, Casa del Mar in Panama City Beach, Florida. In a house that can fit 16 people, one of our favorite breakfast dishes is a French Toast Casserole. It’s quick and easy. Combine all the ingredients, pop it in the oven, and top it with berries. Add my favorite: a Bourbon or Grand Marnier Homemade Whipped Cream with Bourbon Caramelized Bananas.

We’ll post the Homemade Whipped Cream recipe soon, but in the meantime, we encourage you to get started with this recipe.

Grand Marnier French Toast Casserole

Perfect for holidays or any special occasion, this make-ahead dish means you can spend more time enjoying the morning and less time in the kitchen. Simply pop it in the oven, relax with a cup of coffee, and let it bake on its own When it’s ready, serve it warm with a dusting of powdered sugar, fresh berries, and a drizzle of maple syrup. Your guests will be impressed, and your taste buds will be in heaven. This is more than just breakfast; it’s a moment of pure joy shared around the table.

Ingredients

  • 1 Loaf Challah Bread 1-2 Days Old
  • 6 Large Eggs
  • 1 Cup Whole Milk
  • 1/2 Cup Heavy Cream
  • 1/4 Cup Granulated Sugar
  • 1/4 Cup Grand Marnier Liqueur Optional
  • 1/4 Tsp. Salt
  • 1/4 Tsp. Ground Cinnamon
  • 1/4 Cup Unsalted Butter Melted
  • 2 Tbsp Powdered Sugar For Dusting
  • Maple Syrup For Serving
  • Fresh Berries For Garnish

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter or cooking spray. Arrange the slices of challah bread in a single layer in the baking dish.
  • In a mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, sugar, Grand Marnier, vanilla extract, salt, and ground cinnamon until well combined.
  • Pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread slices in the baking dish. Press down gently on the bread to ensure it is fully soaked in the mixture. Let it sit for about 15 minutes to allow the bread to absorb the liquid.
  • Drizzle the melted butter over the top of the soaked bread slices.
  • Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake for 30 minutes. Then, remove the foil and continue baking for an additional 10-15 minutes, or until the French toast is golden brown and cooked through.
  • Once done, remove the casserole from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes. Dust with powdered sugar and serve warm with maple syrup.
  • If desired, garnish with fresh berries for added freshness and flavor.
